Artist. Working as an artist professionally since 1999. Scott's art has been primarily that of oil
painting and drawing, but currently he is working on a public art project at an Marysville
Elementary school called the Marysville Pictograph Project. Portland, OR.
Hand made oil paints. Scott began making oil paints by hand for personal use in 1997 and
has continued making paints for the past nine years. Over the last couple of years Scott
has been gathering different minerals from around the Northwest for use in his art and for
eduacational purposes. Scott has explored a variety of binders from egg tempra, hide glue,
linseed oil, and gum arabic in which can be mixed with the variety of pigments.
Natural Paints Workshop. Scott teaches workshops on gathering earth minerals and how to
prepare them for use as a paint. During the Village Building Convergence of May 2006
Scott taught a workshop on where and how to gather minerals for use as a coloring agent
in art supplies such as paint. Over the course of the workshop, Scott presented materials
and resources for the creation of oil paint and egg tempra from the minerals that were
ground by hand a sifted with a sieve. Portland, OR.
Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. "Life Ways of the Lower Columbia River" Art Instructor.
Scott has been working with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde to help preserve
and create traditional art of the Columbia River through the use of traditional mineral paints.
Tribal members have been learning elements of design and ways to integrate and preserve
traditional stories through visual art such as drawing, painting, and printmaking. As part of a
series of classes, Scott taught tribal members how and where to collect and prepare native
earth pigments for use as paints to be applied to wood carvings, drums, parfleche, and
stone in the traditional manner. Portland, OR. May 2005 - Ongoing.
Marysville Pictograph Project. This art project is still under construction as the developmental
stages are still in the process and will be completed in the summer of 2007. Scott started
teaching after school art in the winter of 2005 at an afterschool art class (Schools Uniting
Neighborhoods) at Marysville Elementary. In the spring of 2005, Scott found out about the
Confluence Project's art in public schools and he presented a proposal to create art at
Marysville Elementary with three different classes of 4th and 5th grade students. In April of
2006 Scott began working with the three different classes individually for two hours a week
until the end of school in June of 2006. The art that was created by the students will be
incorporated into the playground remodel with his own designs based on Columbia River
style art which interperates a story from the Clackamas Chinook Texts titled "Tongue".
Marysville Elementary: 7733 SE Raymond, Portland, OR. April 2005 - Ongoing
